The Gaiwan is the most versatile and popular tea brewing vessel. We often refer to gaiwan brewing as the Freestyle brewing method.

This classic style design is the most widely used. We normally recommend it more so for people wishing to pour their brewed tea by holding the gaiwan by the rim and lid (without the dish). The smaller diameter higher flared cup is better suited for that purpose. It's design is also ideal for large leaf teas.

The gaiwan consists of three pieces; a saucer that holds the cup, a small brewing cup with a flared lip, and a lid for the cup. The lid covers the tea while it is brewed in the cup and holds back the leaves like a strainer. The brewed tea can also be poured into a serving pitcher called a fair pitcher. The saucer can also be used to bring the cup to your lips without having to handle the hot cup.

This 150 ml gaiwan falls into the medium size category. A small might be 60-100 ml, while a large might be 200 - 250 ml. This handcrafted porcelain gaiwan works great at home, in the office, or packed up for your weekend outings. The large lidded opening makes it easy to insert and remove even the biggest tea leaves.
